Elgin Living

In Elgin, residents enjoy a quiet city, low traffic, and a population that hovers around 9,000 people. Small by Austin standards, this little town is becoming known as a great place to live and visit. Homeowners get the unique views of the Texas countryside as well as a fun community – all without the Austin sticker shock or congestion.

Close to Elgin is the McKinney Roughs Nature Park, perfect for hiking, horseback riding, and enjoying a day outside with the family. Residents can enjoy a day at Fleming Community Center, Elgin Memorial Park, or the Morris Memorial Pool. Many new housing developments are also building their own parks, trails, and community areas for Elgin residents to enjoy. The Parks and Recreation department is also breaking ground in 2017 for a brand new recreation center.

Elgin Independent School District has three elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools. From softball, cheer, swimming, to cross country and more, Elgin is known for its robust athletics program and great academic standards.

With annual events like the fire department cook off, Western Days Festival, the Christmas parade, and more, Elgin residents can enjoy time with their neighbors close to home. The historic downtown area is also becoming a hotspot in its own right, with exclusive eateries, shops, boutiques, and even historic walking tours. More and more Austinites are day-tripping to Elgin to see all the area has to offer, making it a thriving daytime area that also provides fun nightlife.

There’s also no lack of amenities, like grocery stores, chain stores, or places to shop. H-E-B, Walmart, and even a few local markets are all in the area. Parents and families are also happy to know that there are a number of doctors, dentists, and health care options in Elgin proper.

For the commuting employee, the best part about Elgin is its easy access to the I-35 corridor. Just a quick drive west on Hwy 290, residents can get anywhere off of I-35 in no time. About 45 minutes into downtown Austin during rush hour, Elgin also provides a faster commute than most other surrounding areas.

And because many people are beginning to realize all that Elgin has to offer, new home communities are breaking ground now. Check out Elgin while the prices are still low – current home prices start in the mid $200s.
