Whisper Valley Announces New 600-Acre Public Park
Austin, Texas (May 10, 2023) –Whisper Valley, a first-of-its-kind, sustainable master-planned community in East Austin, announced plans today for a 600-acre public park. Located just off SH 130 from FM 973 and extending east of Taylor Lane, the park will become the centerpiece of a new master trail plan that will ultimately connect the City of Austin’s 4,000-acre Walter E. Long Park & Lake, the Travis County 14-mile trail system, and the East Metropolitan Park through Whisper Valley, offering an estimated 20 miles of trails.
Often referred to as the “Zilker Park of East Austin,” more than $8 million will be invested in trails and programed areas for Whisper Valley Park that includes picnic areas, manicured open space, playgrounds, shade structures, restrooms, decomposed granite trails, community gardens, a natural amphitheater for events, benches, landscaping and signage.
Phase 1A-1C will include the design and construction of miles of 12-foot-wide pedestrian trails that extend from the community retail center at FM 973 and meander along Gilleland Creek to Taylor Lane. There will be trailheads that allow residents to easily walk and ride bikes from within the neighborhood to the park.
The park, which encompasses an area designated as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, will also feature two programed areas for numerous community activities. The first area will be located adjacent to the community retail center at Braker Lane and FM 973, and the second will be situated near Phase 6 and 7 in the heart of the Whisper Valley community.
Residents of Whisper Valley currently have access to the initial trails through the rolling terrain of the award-winning, 2,063-acre master-planned community known for its sustainable living and zero-energy capable homes.
Phase 1 of Whisper Valley Park’s Concept Plan has begun funding. The final design is scheduled to be completed in 2025 with Phase 1A construction to begin in 2026. There will be seven phases of construction over a six-year period.
