Allen: Thriving Dallas Suburb
Just half an hour north of downtown Dallas is Allen, named after state politician and railroad promoter Ebenezer Allen. After it was established in 1870 by the Houston and Texas Central Railway, the town of Allen grew from an estimated population of 350 to over 90,000 today.
Allen is rich in Texan history. Just a few years after its establishment, Allen was the site of the first alleged train robbery in the state, committed by famed Denton outlaw Sam Bass. The town did go on to flourish in the years to come as the Texas Traction Company built an electric railway through Allen in the early 1900s. Allen’s population waned through the 1940s and 50s but began to grow again in the late 1960s as Dallas and nearby Plano grew. The construction of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport also helped to spur businesses and attract new residents.
Today, Allen is an affluent Dallas suburb that continues to experience growth. It was named the second Best Place to Live by money.com in 2017. Thanks to various tech and cybersecurity companies who have put down roots in the area, the number of available jobs has increased. Plans to develop more office space, retail outlets, and residential options have attracted new residents to the area, including a more diverse population.
Allen’s residents can enjoy plenty of attractions. Hydrous Wake Park is one of the only cable wakeboarding parks in the USA, where both beginners and seasoned wakeboarders are welcome. Entertainment complex TopGolf is just off Andrews Parkway. It has fun courses for kids and adults, in addition to food, drink, and live music. TopGolf is one of many convenient amenities located off Sam Johnson Highway in Allen. Target, TJ Maxx, and Best Buy are nearby. Allen Premium Outlets is just up the road, offering outlet stores to suit everyone’s needs in the family: Banana Republic, Adidas, The Children’s Place, LOFT, and much more.
One of the best reasons to come to Allen is the school system. Allen Independent School District is home to 23 schools with over 21,000 students enrolled. For the 2017-1028 school year, the Allen school district received top marks across the board when it came to student achievement, school progress, and student performance. Parents and families looking for some of the best schools in the state will find them in Allen.
