Allen: Thriving Dallas Suburb
Just half an hour north of downtown Dallas is Allen, named after state politician and railroad promoter Ebenezer Allen. After it was established in 1870 by the Houston and Texas Central Railway, the town of Allen grew from an estimated population of 350 to over 90,000 today.
Allen is rich in Texan history. Just a few years after its establishment, Allen was the site of the first alleged train robbery in the state, committed by famed Denton outlaw Sam Bass. The town did go on to flourish in the years to come as the Texas Traction Company built an electric railway through Allen in the early 1900s. Allen’s population waned through the 1940s and 50s but began to grow again in the late 1960s as Dallas and nearby Plano grew. The construction of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport also helped to spur businesses and attract new residents.
