A Rich History in Mansfield
Mansfield was first settled in the 1840s by pioneer farmers from the southern states. Sawmills, gristmills, general stores, churches, and schools were established by the turn of the century, as the population grew to 1,000 residents. After Mansfield was incorporated in 1909, the population fluctuated over the following decades as more residents settled in the area and businesses were founded.
Fun fact: In 1956, the Mansfield school district was the first in Texas to receive a federal court order for racial integration. The Mansfield school desegregation incident then occurred, where over 300 white citizens protested the enrollment of 3 black students at Mansfield High School. The incident was the first example of failure to enforce desegregation of a public school, and it was followed by a similar situation in Little Rock, Arkansas the next year. The school district quietly desegregated in 1965, and has changed much for the better today.
