Highland Homes Purchases Defibrillators for Every Model Home

(Dallas, TX – April 9, 2024) — Highland Homes is adding something new to every one of its model homes, but it’s not a feature the builder offers in a newly built home. In fact, Highland Homes hopes it will remain locked away and never needed.

The new addition is an automated external defibrillator, or AED.

Last year one of our beloved Employee Owners had an emergency heart event while on the way to work. It was an AED at a gas station that helped save his life. Through that event, we quickly realized equipping all our model homes with AEDs was a small but essential step we could take to potentially save lives in our communities.

Highland has purchased more than 150 AEDs across all divisions — including Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin — at a cost of more than $225,000.

It’s well worth the investment. According to the American Red Cross, sudden cardiac arrest is among the leading causes of death in the U.S., with more than 350,000 people suffering from cardiac arrest each year. We certainly don’t ever want this to happen to anyone at one of our model homes or working in our communities, but if it does, we’ll be prepared.

An AED measures hearth rhythm and if needed, can deliver an electrical shock to help the heart return to a normal rhythm. The American Red Cross says use of an AED can be life-saving, as the odds of survival are reduced by approximately 10 percent for each minute defibrillation is delayed.

Highland’s AEDs are being distributed to each division office where human resources staff will manage assembly and data maintenance for each model home. The 6.7-pound AEDs will be stored in cabinets along with an instructional poster. Employees at the model homes will also undergo CPR training.

As new model homes open — more than 50 are expected to open statewide this year — new devices will be purchased for each. The pads and batteries will be replaced regularly to ensure the AEDs work properly.

If we are able to save even one life, it will be worth it. We’ll not only protect our Employee Owners working in the communities across the state but also provide a life-saving resource for visitors and residents in the community.
