Richmond: Historic Small Town on the Rise
Just 30 miles southwest of downtown Houston is Richmond, the county seat for Fort Bend County. It’s a smaller city of over 11,000 residents, rich in history and economic opportunities.
Richmond sits on the Brazos River near Highways 90 and 59. In 1822, a group of colonists from Austin traveled up the river and camped in the area where Richmond now sits. A log fort built at the bend in the Brazos River would eventually become the hub of their settlement, called Fort Bend. In 1837, Richmond was first incorporated and became the seat of Fort Bend County. Richmond lasted through a yellow fever epidemic in 1853, the Civil War, and an enormous flood in 1899. Its population grew from approximately 1,200 in 1920 to nearly 10,000 by 1980. The last estimated population from 2010 was over 11,000.

The Richmond Renaissance
Richmond is a historic Texas city, but it’s also undergoing something of a renaissance. The Development Corporation of Richmond has ongoing projects to improve residents’ quality of life, including recruiting new businesses, road projects, reducing train noise in historic downtown, and more. However, Richmond still has plenty of small town charm to offer homebuyers, especially in its historic downtown area. Sandy McGee’s is a longstanding local restaurant that serves comfort food. Just around the corner is Joseph’s Coffee & Cigars, a friendly coffee shop with a wide variety of cigar choices. History buffs can head to Fort Bend Museum south of Jackson Street, which offers rotating exhibits and guided house tours in a 19th century dwelling.

Homebuyers looking for a smaller, quiet city with convenient amenities can appreciate what Richmond has to offer. Pecan Grove Park, just down the road from Pecan Grove Plantation Country Club, has well-maintained playgrounds and sports facilities. George Park sits south of the Brazos River, and has spacious play areas and a scenic walking trail. Most of Richmond’s schools in the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District sit south of the river as well. Parents looking to run errands around Richmond can stop at the Walmart off FM 1640, where it’s close to a post office, Home Depot, and Target. Furthermore, the highly-rated pediatrician’s office Gentle Pediatrics sits east of shopping areas off I-69. It’s not far from family dentistry and orthodontics offices, either.
If your clients are looking to move to a smaller city that’s quickly growing, take them on a tour of Richmond today! Many new homes are being built in the area, so your clients are sure to find what they’re looking for in Richmond.
